LITTLE JOYS! December 2024

Because it’s not the big goals and successes in life that bring true happiness, but the little joys that you choose to notice each day...

YES, I confess, it has been QUIET here for a long time now. I hit a few roadblocks with it, and it was taking up too much of my time and reaching almost nobody, so I decided my writing was a much higher priority for the time being. However, now I’ve made a good deal of progress on that, I think it’s time to have another try here! Little Joys will be monthly instead of weekly, and I hope to get round to writing about writing a bit more!

So without further ado, here are some of my little joys from back in December – a quiet month in many ways, since I found myself unemployed for the Christmas period and spent a lot of time at my computer, focusing on editing my novel. But there are always joys to be found – you’ve just got to remember to notice, to look for them, to take a moment to be grateful.

In winter I am always more pleased than ever to see a clear bright blue sky – and shorter days also bring the opportunity to watch the sun rise.

Little Joys: Blue morning sky over rooftops, the sun just about to rise into view...

The cotinus in our garden has THE most beautiful autumn leaves. When it’s scattered all over the garden is when I love it most!

Little Joys: Wet fallen leaves on a patio, in bright oranges, yellows and pinks.

It was a poor year for homegrown veg, and the bean harvest was so brief we missed it while we were on holiday – but I let the beans ripen fully and dry out instead, and I’m looking forward to planting their seeds (two heritage varieties) for next summer.

Little Joys: Dried bean seed on a table: some white, some brown. Empty husks lying behind.

Cabbage pie. It’s onions and bacon, diced potaoes and cabbage, stirred through cheese sauce and baked under a breadcrumb crust.

Little Joys: Cabbage pie in a baking dish, half gone.

Eskimo Disco live in London! We used to follow them yeeeears ago but they quit to go and have families – we never expected to see them back onstage again. It was fab!

Band onstage: three men in red shirts. Audience's heads in the foreground.

They were supporting My Life Story – another old favourite. It was a great night!

Another band onstage, audience in the foreground.

Camden Lock at night.

Little Joys: Camden lock at night. Black and white buildings match the lock gates, bridge and railings. A huge weeping willow to the left.

Quick supper for one. Super glad I found this recipe by Tin Eats – it was delicious and fit the bill perfectly!

Little Joys: Macaroni with broccoli, in a bowl.

Beautiful sunset while Christmas shopping!

Town centre with Georgian town hall and brightly-lit Christmas tree, under a pink and mauve cloudy sky. Trees frame the shot.

Moody marketplace…

A narrow marketplace between black-beamed buildings, moody pink/grey clouds above.

A spot of sherry while putting the Christmas decorations up. A wasp crawled out of our Christmas tree! She must have been hibernating – I was a bit sorry to put her back out in the cold.

Sherry bottle and glass, on a table, in front of an as-yet-undecorated Christmas tree.

Tiger in the Night.

Little Joys: Jigsaw puzzle, complete except for one missing piece, showing artwork depicting a tiger's face moving through the night sky. The tiger's neck/body becomes a mass of tiny cartoon characters and random objects.

Bought some wax melts (in our local garden centre!) to scent the house with Christmassy spruce and spices.

Pick-and-mix wax melts on a shop shelf.

Playing our favourite Christmas albums. I don’t know why all the shops play the same old dross all the time!

Four records:
Phil Spector's Christmas Album,
It's a Holiday Soul Party by Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings,
3 Ships by Jon Anderson,
Wild Winter by the Smoke Fairies,
and on CD, It's Christmas Time with Bing Crosby, Frank SInatra and Nat King Cole.

Rosemary flowering in the garden.

Rosemary flowers, pale blue amid dark green spike leaves.

Erigeron karvinskianus. It seems to flower all year round in a sheltered spot!

Daisy-like flowers, white and yellow.

Primrose.

White primrose flower with yellow centre.

Viburnum bodnantense – I wish you could smell it!

Tiny pink clusters of flowers on otherwsie bare twigs.

Nature’s treasures. I love it when the low winter sun catches them.

Trinket shelf with a variety of gemstones, dried fungus and lichen, dragonfly larvae husks, tree bark and snail shells.

My gorgeous Roger la Borde advent calendar.

Little Joys: Cardboard slot-together pieces forming a tree house decorated with woodland animals, wrapped gifts, baubles, bunting and so on.

Oh boy, Christmas dinner! I forgot to add gravy! But everything was so delicous I didn’t even miss it!

Plateful of Christmas dinner including turket and bread sauce, mashed swede, potatoes, peas, carrots, sprouts, stuffings and parsnips.

Hot chocolate Christmas pud and chocolate sauce, made by yours truly. I must share the recipe with you sometime…

Chocolate Christmas pud, dusted with sugar and topped with holly, on a plate.

It’s full of chopped nuts and orange zest and spices…

Sliced pud showing the dense, chocolatey inside, dotted with nuts.

Cedar of Lebanon on our Boxing Day walk.

Cedar of Lebanon. It's big.

Beautiful fungi!

Little Joys: Bright orange toadstools in a tight cluster, among leaf litter and weeds.

I love Christmas leftovers just as much as I love Christmas dinner/Christmas day.

Plateful including Russian salad, turkey, houmous, brie, olives, green salad, and buttered bread.

Marmalade cheesecake. It’s wonderful.

Little Joys: Slice of creamy cheescake, studded with orange zest.

Setting my intentions for 2025 in my bullet journal. I’ve focussed very hard on writing for a couple of years, but now I need a better balance.

My bullet journal. The page reads 2025, year of BALANCE and lists my priorities below: health, writing, admin, church, community gardening, garden, work, play.

Impressive stinking hellebore – we spotted it on our New Year Plant Hunt!

Little Joys: Stinking hellebore among leaf litter, with dark green leaves like hands, and pale green flowers standing proud.

Looking back over 2024. As always, I’m blown away by how blessed I am. Recording the good things in life is so worthwhile. Now bring on 2025!

My bullet journal, with the months listed across the top of a double-page spread, and notes about each month below (blurred for privacy).
