LITTLE JOYS! January 2025

Because it’s not the big goals and successes in life that bring true happiness, but the little joys that you choose to notice each day…

I don’t love January – does anyone? – and it’s typically extremely quiet for me work-wise which means I spend a lot of time in hibernation at home; if I’m not careful, I start to merge with my chair. But over the years, and thanks in part to my bullet journal, I’ve worked hard at taking each time of year for what it is and intentionally making the most of it.

This January, I knew I wouldn’t get out for many walks but I made the most of my Pilates subscription. I knew dry January would just make me miserable so we agreed a ‘no drinking at home’ rule (once the last Christmas beer was gone!) and planned a few nice occasions out instead. I thought carefully about what useful tasks I could get done indoors that would improve the shape of the year ahead – reorganising our bedroom, planning the garden, and of course working hard on my writing – and I did them!

And as always, I was careful to take time to be grateful for all the little joys (and bigger ones) that kept me going along the way:

Setting some intentions.

A piece of paper stuck to the wall reads 'winter bingo' with a grid of 25 fun activities to do this season.

Lamb aubergine pastitsio always makes me happy.

Little Joys: a piece of lamb pastitsio on a plate - meat and veg ragu with macaroni cheese topping.

The last Christmas craft beer.

Little Joys: a can of Vocation Brewery's Double Tonka Frappe coffee stout. Beer in a glass beside it on the table.

Spotting fungus on a nature walk.

Little Joys: frilly bracket fungus on a dead prone log.

King Alfred’s cakes.

Smooth round brown fungus on a prone dead log.

Got a bit emotional eating this – pasta with a very simple tomato sauce made from my homegrown tomatoes in the summer, and frozen til now.

Little Joys: an empty plate smeared with bright tomato sauce.

Treated myself to a new sticker book with Christmas money.

Little Joys: A sticker book on a table. Its called Boho Dreams.

It might be the prettiest sticker book in the world!

Inside the sticker book, painted stickers of camping/travel scenes, a tent, a hurricane lamp, a deer, a backpack, a squirrel, a boot full of wildflowers and more.

Eye-catching cloud.

Little Joys: blue sky over rooftops, and a stack of white cloud lit by the rising sun beneath.

Garlic growing through a sprinkling of snow.

Little Joys: a canvas grow-bed with garlic growing in it, and a frosting of snow on the soil surface and leaves.

Frosty kale.

Little Joys: frosty kale in the garden.

Frosty heuchera.

Frosty purple frilly-edged heuchera leaves.

A lot of frosty things!

Little Joys: Frosty scene from the garden, with a pond, a fernery and logs, a birdpath filled with plants, all crisp and white with frost.

Beef stew with olive oil dumplings – husband’s favourite!

Little Joys: Unctuous brown stew with lumps of meat, carrot, mushrooms, and three shiny steamed dumplings.

Planning my veg garden – the only kind of gardening I do in January! I bought a bunch of new varieties from Real Seeds

Little Joys: Seed packets semi-organised in piles on a table, with notebook, pen, plant labels, coffee...

Something new I’ve been trying in my bullet journal, to balance my priorities better.

Little Joys: Half a page of my journal is labelled 'week goals', with goals split into 8 categories beneath. A circle split into 8 segments will show how well I balanced my priorities at the end of the week. A sticker reads 'you fucking got this'.

We reorganised a section of the bedroom and bought better storage at last!

Cube-style storage at the end of our bed, the bottom row stuffed with shoes so far...

Rainbow!

Little Joys: Blue sky, white clouds, and half a rainbow over a wet suburban street.

Made pork ramen and it was delicious! More broth next time…

Little Joys: Bowlful of noodles, shredded pork, mushrooms and kale.

Snowdrops at the community garden.

Little Joys: a bunch of snowdrops growing through leaf litter. In the background is grass, a raised bed, and industrial buildings.

Sunday roast at the pub.

Roast beef slices, Yorkshire pudding, shredded cabbage and roast veg, and a pot of gravy, on a plate, on a table. Glass of red wine to the side. The plate opposite mine is similar but with roast chicken.

What a handsome boy!

Little Joys: an absolutely majestic pure white maine coon cat, ears pricked up, its tail a thick plume, front paws up on a log while it looks at something in the distance.

Moss-scape.

Little Joys: the top of a red brick wall, populated with mosses like a miniature landscape.

Making chicken broth.

Little Joys: A stockpot on a hob, filled with water and ingredients: chicken bones and skin, onion wedges, bay leaves, celery, carrots, peppercorns...

All stocked up!

Twelve jars of finished stock on my kitchen counter.

Date night! Both these drinks are normal sizes…

A glass of white wine and pint of beer, on a table in a bar. Wood surrounds and leather seats. String lights on the ceiling.

Bought a new orchid for my desk.

Little Joys: close-up on an orchid: purple spots on pale petals.

Pretty viburnum down the street.

Little Joys: clusters of white viburnum flowers opening from pink buds among glossy green leaves in the sunshine.

Look up!

Little Joys: an intricate lattice of bare tree branches against a clear blue sky.

Reorganised my desk. I love my desk!

Little Joys: my writing desk, with laptop and notebooks, orchid in a pot, trinket shelves full of stones, an oil burner, a desktop bookshelf packed with writing books, a brass lamp, stuffed tigers, pen pots and a glass of water. More bookshelves above, and to the side, a bit of my dressing table with necklaces hanging on a wire tree and a gold tortoise-shaped bowl full of bracelets!

Reviewing the month in my bullet journal – it’s my favourite bujo task!

A double-page spread of my bullet journal, edged with wintery washi tape, set up for my monthly review: the left page is titled 'the best of January' and the right 'the rest of January', with subheadings 'wins', 'fails', 'lessons'. A sticker bottom right reads 'make your own beauty'.

Treated myself to a new jumper and I’ve hardly been out of it since.

Little Joys: a brown mohair batwing jumper laid out on a bed.

Bought myself the brightest flowers I could find. Shame I couldn’t get the light right in this picture… Everyone deserves flowers in January!

Little Joys: bunch of flowers in a vase - red roses, yellow freesias, blue irises and some pink and yellow/orange gerberas.
