LITTLE JOYS! March 2026

Because it’s not the big goals and successes in life that bring true happiness, but the little joys that you choose to notice each day…

After a super quiet February, March was full of lovely things, yet I have to admit I feel like my brain is still in winter. I’ve been giving a lot of thought lately to how much I… well… shut myself away in my head with my thoughts, sometimes, and fail to be as present as perhaps would be good for me and my life. But spring is a time of transition, and this new awareness will lead to new intentions… In the meantime though, here’s what I’ve been up to.

A favourite pub in Gloucester. Dark mild and live music.

Water under the bridge.

Photo: graffiti on pillars, and muddy puddles, under a bridge beside a river.

Perfect day for a walk.

Photo: blue sky with contrails, over a green field which is waterlogged and reflects the sky in its puddles.

We drank some good beer here before a wander round the docks in the sun.

Photo: sunlight shining through a window onto the floor, between picnic-style tables and benches.

Impressed by this living wall!

Photo: a living wall six storeys high on a multi-storey car park.

Gloucester cathedral.

Golden hour.

Full moon and aeroplane.

Photo: a blurry moon in a black sky, with an aeroplane's contrail highlighted by its glare.

Cheltenham postboxes. We did a treasure trail here!

Photo: historic postboxes and telephone boxes.

Cool story bro.

Photo: part of a park bandstand, with railings painted pink, blue, and teal. A green plaque tells the story of a Mr John Hampton, "the first person to make a successful descent by a parachute" on October 3rd, 1838, "from a balloon which ascended from these gardens".

There’s a LOT of mistletoe in Cheltenham!

Photo: a bare tree with lots of mistletoe.

Brilliant steak and waffle fries at Gloucester docks.

Photo: sliced steak over a pile of waffle fries. Watercress. Lots of sea salt and cracked black pepper.

Awesome craft beer at the Drunken Duck.

Phot of a small glass of beer in front of a neon light shaped like an alien.

Stunning Gloucester cathedral.

Photo: cathedral interior with vast stained glass window, altar, and ornate ceiling above.

Foggy mornings.

Photo: Foggy treeline.

Watched long-tailed tits making this nest. Lichen on the outside, feathers and moss on the inside.

Photo: lichen-covered cup-shaped nest among the red twigs of a shrub.

Garden camellias. (Not mine.)

Photo: pink garden flowers and blue sky.

Seedlings! These are subergines, chillies, and bell peppers.

Hairy-footed flower bees.

Photo: Primroses and a long-tongued golden bee.

Beautiful blossom.

Hot chocolate after a cold day outdoors.

Just a kitten hanging out in a vape shop.

My dracaena cuttings are developing roots…

The biggest red pepper in the world… ever.

Photo: a gigantic red pepper on the palm of my hand.

Was rather pleased with my Mothers day lunch for the fam: a delicious Italian-themed buffet.

Photo: a plate of food including herbed sliced chicken, salami, potato and green bean salad, pizza, mozzarella, boiled egg, olives.

Brisket date!

Photot: a metal platter of food - beef brisket slices plus pot of pit beans, blue cheese sauce, pickles. Fries on the side.

Spooky.

Photo: hazy grey sky with orange sun shining dimly through like a torch.

Breakfast date!

Photo: full English breakfast.

I whizzed last year’s dried chillies in the blender. Next time, I’ll wear a mask…

Photo: view down into a jar of finely chopped red chillies.

Strange dark stripe in the clouds… It’s the shadow of a contrail!

Little Joys: photo of white sheet clouds in a blue sky with the sun glowing through, and a dark shadowy line across the whole cloud.

Wes Anderson: the Archives, at the Design Museum. Highly recommended!

Lobster smashburger thank you please.

Another brilliant living wall!
